Cryoablation for Chronic Pain.

An innovative, minimally invasive pain management procedure that uses controlled cold temperatures to interrupt pain signals transmitted by targeted nerves.

Key Information

  • Cryoablation is an innovative, minimally invasive pain management procedure that uses controlled cold temperatures to interrupt pain signals transmitted by targeted nerves. Performed under image guidance, cryoablation may be considered for patients experiencing ongoing pain that has not responded adequately to more conservative treatments.

Cryoablation procedures are performed by Dr Sanjay Nadkarni, an experienced Interventional Radiologist with more than 20 years of experience performing image-guided procedures. Using advanced imaging technology, treatment can be delivered with precision while minimising disruption to surrounding tissues.

As one of the newer developments in interventional pain management, cryoablation offers an additional treatment option for select patients seeking a minimally invasive approach to managing chronic pain.

  • Cryoablation, sometimes referred to as cryoneurolysis or cryoneuroablation, uses extremely low temperatures to temporarily disrupt the ability of a nerve to transmit pain signals.

During the procedure, a specialised probe is placed near the target nerve using image guidance. The probe creates a controlled "ice ball" around the nerve, interrupting pain signal transmission while preserving the underlying nerve structure. Over time, the nerve may regenerate, which means the duration of pain relief can vary between individuals.

Cryoablation is performed as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure and does not typically require surgical incisions or a hospital visit.

  • Pain is often transmitted through specific peripheral nerves that carry signals from injured or irritated tissues to the brain.

Cryoablation works by applying controlled cold temperatures to these nerves. The treatment interrupts the nerve's ability to transmit pain signals while allowing the surrounding tissue to remain largely unaffected.

Because the nerve structure remains intact, regeneration can occur over time. For this reason, the duration of symptom improvement varies between patients and depends on the condition being treated.

  • Cryoablation is increasingly being used as part of a comprehensive pain management approach for select patients experiencing chronic musculoskeletal and nerve-related pain.

Conditions that may be considered for cryoablation include:

    Knee Pain

Cryoablation may be considered for select patients experiencing persistent knee pain, including pain associated with osteoarthritis.

    Shoulder Pain

Certain nerves contributing to chronic shoulder pain may be suitable for cryoablation treatment.

    Hip Pain

Patients experiencing ongoing hip pain may benefit from specialist assessment to determine whether cryoablation is an appropriate option.

    Post-Surgical Pain

Cryoablation has been used in select cases to help manage persistent pain following surgery.

    Peripheral Nerve Pain

Certain peripheral nerves responsible for chronic pain conditions may be suitable targets for cryoablation treatment.

Not all pain conditions are suitable for cryoablation. A detailed consultation and review of imaging are required to determine whether treatment may be appropriate.

  • The success of cryoablation relies on accurately identifying and targeting the nerve responsible for pain.

As an Interventional Radiologist, Dr Nadkarni uses advanced imaging technology to visualise anatomy in real time and guide the cryoablation probe to the intended treatment location.

Depending on the procedure, image guidance may involve:

    • Ultrasound guidance

    • Fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance

    • CT guidance

This allows treatment to be performed with precision while avoiding nearby nerves, blood vessels and other important structures.

  • Specialist Interventional Radiology Expertise

Patients can access specialist pain management services from conveniently located clinics in Perth and Bunbury.

  • Before treatment, a consultation and assessment are undertaken to determine whether cryoablation is appropriate for your condition.

    During the procedure:

    • The treatment area is cleaned using sterile technique.

    • Imaging guidance is used to identify the target nerve.

    • Local anaesthetic is administered.

    • A specialised cryoablation probe is positioned near the nerve.

    • Controlled cooling is applied to create the treatment effect.

    • The probe is removed and a small dressing is applied.

It is usual for patients to return home on the same day.

  • Cryoablation is not suitable for every type of chronic pain. The most appropriate treatment depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, previous treatments and overall health.

During your consultation, Dr Nadkarni will review your medical history, imaging and treatment goals before discussing whether cryoablation may be an appropriate option as part of your pain management plan.

  • If you are experiencing chronic knee pain, shoulder pain, hip pain or persistent nerve-related pain, speak with your GP or specialist about a referral.

Our Perth and Bunbury clinics offer specialist assessment and image-guided cryoablation procedures as part of a comprehensive interventional pain management service.
