Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP).

A regenerative therapy that uses a patient's own blood to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

Key Information

  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an innovative treatment that uses your body's own healing mechanisms to help manage a range of musculoskeletal conditions. At our dedicated pain management clinics in Perth and Bunbury, all PRP injections are performed by an experienced Interventional Radiologist with more than 20 years of experience in image-guided procedures.

Using advanced ultrasound and imaging technology, PRP can be delivered precisely to the area requiring treatment. This image-guided approach assists with accurate needle placement and allows treatment to be targeted to the intended structure.

Whether you are experiencing ongoing tendon pain, sports-related injuries, osteoarthritis or chronic musculoskeletal pain, PRP may be considered as part of an individualised treatment plan.

  • PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma, a concentrated solution created from a small sample of your own blood.

Blood contains platelets, which play an important role in the body's natural healing processes. These platelets contain growth factors that are involved in tissue repair and regeneration. PRP treatment involves collecting a blood sample, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the platelet-rich solution into the treatment area. Research suggests these concentrated growth factors may help support healing and tissue recovery in selected musculoskeletal conditions.

Because PRP is created using your own blood, it is considered an autologous treatment, meaning the injected material comes from your own body.

  • PRP is commonly used in pain management and sports medicine for conditions involving joints, tendons, ligaments and soft tissues.

Conditions that may be considered for PRP treatment include:

    Osteoarthritis

PRP may be used for select patients with osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee and other weight-bearing joints. Research continues to investigate its role in helping manage pain, stiffness and joint function.

    Tendon Injuries

PRP is frequently used in the management of chronic tendon conditions, including:

    • Tennis elbow

    • Golfer's elbow

    • Patellar tendinopathy

    • Rotator cuff tendinopathy

    • Gluteal tendinopathy

    • Achilles tendinopathy

Studies suggest PRP may have a role in supporting tendon healing in selected patients.

    Sports and Soft Tissue Injuries

PRP may also be considered for selected ligament, muscle and soft tissue injuries where conservative treatment has not provided adequate improvement.

Not all patients are suitable candidates for PRP treatment. A thorough assessment is required to determine whether PRP may be appropriate for your condition.

  • The success of any injection procedure relies heavily on accurate placement.

As an Interventional Radiologist, Dr Sanjay Nadkarni uses advanced imaging technology to visualise the target structure during treatment. Depending on the condition being treated, ultrasound or other imaging guidance may be used to assist with precise needle placement.

Image-guided PRP injections may be particularly valuable when treating:

    • Tendons

    • Ligaments

    • Deep joints

    • Small joints

    • Areas close to nerves and blood vessels

This specialist approach helps ensure treatment is delivered to the intended location.

  • PRP treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure and no hospital visit is required.

    The process generally involves:

    1. A small blood sample is collected.

    2. The blood is processed to concentrate the platelets.

    3. The treatment area is identified using imaging guidance.

    4. The PRP is injected into the target structure.

The entire appointment is usually completed within approximately 45 to 60 minutes.

  • PRP is not suitable for every condition or every patient. The most appropriate treatment depends on your diagnosis, symptoms, medical history and previous treatments.

During your consultation, Dr Nadkarni will assess your condition, review any imaging and discuss whether PRP may be an appropriate option as part of your overall pain management plan.

  • If you are experiencing ongoing joint pain, tendon pain, osteoarthritis or a sports-related injury, speak with your GP or specialist about whether PRP treatment may be appropriate for you.
